Lorentz Center - Get Engaged!

We are very thankful for all the support we have received for (y)our new common room.

We are thankful for all the generous gifts and we are happy to see that so many people believe in the Lorentz Center Philosophy.

We are working hard to finalize the new common room, as you can see we have come far already. We look forward to welcoming you to the Lorentz Center in future, to enjoy science and good coffee.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lorentz Center is an international center for scientific workshops, based on the philosophy that science thrives on interaction between creative researchers. We aim for open discussions and new collaborations between researchers from different countries and fields, and with varying seniority.

Good research starts with good coffee

We reach our objectives, among others, by creating an informal and comfortable setting that stimulates open interactions. The common room is pivotal in this, where informal talks, discussions, drinks and laughs are the basis for scientific progress.

After 20 years, the common room@Oort is in desperate need of an update. We plan to improve the common room in the autumn of 2016. Will you help us with the last E 15.000?

The new common room

Unfortunately, we will have to say goodbye to our famous yellow sofa, which has seated around 25.000 scientists in the past 20 years. In the new Common Room, we would like to create a balance between science and relaxation, with two new coffee machines, a new sofa, a new larger table, small subgroup discussion tables and a large blackboard wall, while we will keep the unique cozy atmosphere of the Lorentz Center.

Get engaged with us and (y)our common room

We urge you to get engaged with the Lorentz Center and help us to finance your new common room. Know that your support is greatly appreciated by all visitors and employees at the Lorentz Center alike. Thank you!

Is yours among the three highest donations?

We then will design a special Lorentz Center poster of your favorite scientific image. Whilst we exhibit your poster for one year in the new common room, you will also receive three printed copies for your own walls. Our rule: when donating multiple times, your total donation counts.

Of course, all the donators will be invited to our grand opening in November.

“The first Lorentz Center workshop I attended was back in 2000. I was very impressed with the idea and the setup and soon organized my first own workshop, namely on thermally driven turbulence. That workshop brought together the leading scientists in the field for twee weeks of intense discussion and has built the scientific community. Ever since that community has met every two years somewhere in the world. Altogether, this has led to tremendous scientific progress in the field. It is the Lorentz Center which triggered all that with some little seed investment.”

“Our 2016 Lorentz Center workshop was very dynamic, with interspersed plenary discussions and brainstorms with focused work in subgroups, and it worked really well. The possibility to relax in the common room – or go on with our discussions – was very important.”

“The Lorentz Center is a great place to meet your fellow scientists. I have had many in-depth discussions in their common room. I fully support its renovation – we cannot do without!”

"In 2014 the Lorentz center offered me the opportunity to invite 23 international researchers from a broad range of disciplines to work for a week on a new research programme on musicality. It turned out to have a major impact on my own research and the field at large. I’m very grateful for the opportunity, support and facilties offered by the center."

About the Lorentz Center

In 2016, the Lorentz Center hosts 78 workshops that typically last 5 days. Lorentz Center workshops promote innovative research, at the scientific frontiers as well as on complex societal challenges. Our workshops are characterized by ample time for active discussions and informal interactions. Any researcher from any country can organize a workshop in any scientific field(s), and all proposals are peer-reviewed by several of our 100-odd board members. Each workshop is provided a basic budget, while the Lorentz Center itself is supported by public funding: Leiden University and the Dutch science foundations NWO, FOM, STW and KNAW.
