During our 440-year anniversary – under the motto freedom – we as Leiden University want to make this year extra special by inspiring others, so we can spread some of the joy of this special celebration year. Our project ‘Give Students a Chance’ on www.steunleiden.nl offers students from Afghanistan and South Africa the chance of gaining knowledge in Leiden. We also asked yóur attention for this project and you reacted massively!

Five Afghan students at Leiden University Medical Center

Education is one of the most effective ways of helping people. By inviting students for an intense 3-4 months working period we will give them an exceptional and valuable experience. With subjects like for instance surgery and anatomy, which are not part of the university curriculum in Aghanistan.

Five Afghan students passed all admission tests and have arrived in Leiden: Sayed Sahil Hashemzay, Jamaluddin Mirajan, Ahmad Jawad Mujaddedi, Reshad Payenda and Abdul Rahman Saleem. They are lyrical and seizing this opportunity with both hands. Your donation makes this possible, so we sincerely thank you - also on behalf of the students!

South African students

Mandela said: ‘Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.’ We also would like to offer this opportunity to three students from South Africa. Part of the amount that we need to realise this has been donated, but we are not there yet: in the coming months we will be looking for additional funding to invite them to Leiden too.We will keep you updated, because they deserve this opportunity as well.

We hope you will continue to follow the project: http://www.steunleiden.nl/projecten/kans-voor-studenten
